Styling your home with personality

A pretty butterfly bowl and a vase of fresh blooms in season add colour and a feminine touch to this side table I styled at our Holland Park Bungalow project

When styling homes I like to combine new considered accessories with treasured things collected or inherited over time which tell my client’s individual story.

Combining new things and old when styling makes your home look more lived in, homely and not so predictable. Include something which means something to you like a vase which belonged to your Mum, an old camera that belonged to your grandfather, or a pretty drawing in a frame that your 6 year old completed at school.

Flowers and plants add movement to your space. Try putting a plant in an old antique pot or a rattan basket rather than a standard plant pot to add some interest and make the space more eclectic. You may have something at home you could use or find something in a second hand store. If you want to buy new, Pottery Barn has a good selection of rattan baskets for plants.

Coffee table books are a must when styling as they help to add something personal to your room and something useful. Select books that you are interested in whether it be on the subject of interiors, fashion, history or art or all of the above. Support your local bookstore or an Australian online supplier. My go to bookstore in brisbane is Avid Reader in West End, voted one of the best book stores in Australia.

Combine a range of accessories including interesting ornaments and vases, pretty boxes, books, candles, plants, flowers, and photo frames to create your own story to tell and add warmth and interest to your home. A rattan tray is always a good idea on a coffee table or ottoman to ground the items and display your collection of things.

And don’t forget to have some fun and change things around when you feel like it.

This antique vase adds interest and a touch of history to this styled rattan tray on the custom made ottoman at our Holland Park Bungalow project. The orchard sits in a vintage basket from New Guinea and the candle adds some romance and a beautiful scent to the room.

A precious Wedgewood Vase belonging to my client was perfect for these gum leaves and adds something personal as a table decoration at our Bardon Cottage Project .

At our Bardon project, the Hydrangeas in one of the Ginger jars soften the space and add something real while a rattan tray is used to add texture .
