why do I need curtains?

As an interior designer I can wax lyrical about why it is a good idea to install custom made curtains in your home but here are just a few of my justifications to talk you around.

In a living area, curtains add privacy and soften the space. Even if you have a view, curtains help to filter the light and frame the view. A view is much more charming taken in through the softness of elegant sheer curtains blowing in the breeze.

In a bedroom, it is essential to have curtains with a block out lining to allow you to sleep well at night and not be woken up at 4.30am in summer, as is the case in Queensland. According to the Sleep Foundation ‘Light has dramatic effects on sleep, influencing circadian rhythm, melatonin production, and sleep cycles’.

Curtains and lining also add warmth in winter and help to block the heat in summer as well as reduce noise. A sheer curtain with a block out lining is a good choice for bedrooms as it allows you to have the sheers drawn during the day to filter the light and for privacy and to draw the block out lining at night.

In a living area, a block out is not necessary unless it is a movie room, but a partial block out is a good choice to stop some of the heat and sunlight damaging your furniture. In Australia and especially Queensland the sun is very strong and can fade your indoor furniture. Drawing the curtains in the hottest part of the day not only helps to cool the room but stops upholstered furniture from fading.

All the functional reasons to have curtains aside, curtains are a beautiful finish to your interiors which will complete your room, add softness, elegance and let’s face it another beautiful fabric or pattern to add to the space.
